![]() If the world of potentially relevant knowledge sources is strikingly large, the domain of information ‒ that almost chaotic strata taken to be the building blocks of knowledge ‒ can be said to be vast. These frameworks are among the librarian’s most reliable finding aids: bibliographic classification schemes, structured search fields, indexes, and citators. An understanding of the various frameworks for organizing and displaying information is as important to carrying out expert research as the first two skills are. ![]() Like all professional skill sets, they interact and feed into each other in hidden but significant ways. The successful application of one depends on the simultaneous performance of one or more of the others. Most of the skills I emphasize are intimately related to each other. John Azzolini, in Law Firm Librarianship, 2013 Information management Provide tools and instructions for the staff at the owning library to create metadata. Generate authority lists from metadata that has already been entered so the next time a value is used it can be selected from the list. ■Ĭreate templates for metadata entry that have fields already completely or partially filled in. Use optical character recognition (OCR) on type-written text to create a transcription that can be indexed in lieu of subject metadata. Use untrained staff to enter the basic identification metadata and let a trained cataloguer assign subject headings and other specialised metadata as needed. ■Įncode some metadata, particularly structural metadata, in filenames and write a script to create metadata based on the filenames. Utilise the electronic files accompanying the materials, map the descriptions to Dublin Core elements and write a script to generate the Dublin Core elements automatically. ![]() ![]() Here we simply outline our approach: ■Ĭreate brief records with broad subject headings. #META DATA CREATOR HOW TO#We will discuss how to create metadata records in detail in Chapter 6. As the DCPC is not staffed with a dedicated cataloguer, we try to automate the creation of metadata as much as we can. Metadata creation is time-consuming and costly. ![]()
